Along with the usual hazards that come with links courses, Southerndown Golf Course also has a plethora of gorse and heather plants that can be game wreckers. There is little in the way of rough and can be forgiving off the tee but if straying too far gorse and bracken will be waiting. The front 9 is considered the scoring half with some good opportunities along with stunning views across the channel from most holes. The short holes on the front 9 are possible the toughest with a large valley & pot bunker catching anything short on the 5th and a tricky downhill shot to the long 7th usually into the wind. The back 9 starts with a mid length par 3 where the front right edge should be the target letting the ball run down to the flag however not too far right to catch the sand and a tough up and down. There are some interesting holes to follow which lead to a tough 4 hole finish 3 of which are usually played directly into the wind and have ruined many a card off the tee. The signature 18th is a 420 yard par 4 which does look simple at first, but as you play downhill you will discover hazards on your left and right and a green that is surrounded by deep pot bunkers. Due to the course being blessed with free draining links ground and excellent turf, the course is dry and playable all year round.
Southerndown Golf Club is located just over 20 miles West of Cradiff, easily accessible via the M4 & A473.
