Created in 1894, redesigned by James Braid in 1937 and now regarded as one of the top courses locally, this parkland course comes replete with gently rolling fairways set among mature woodland. Controlling the ball from the tee is essential due to the tree lined narrow fairways and bunker guarded greens. The signature 15th starts from an elevated tee with out of bounds on the left hand side and graduating rough the main hazards. The green looks deceptively unprotected but numerous slopes and swells guard against poor shots.
Worsley Golf Club is located just over 6 miles West of Manchester, easily accessible via the A6 / A580.
On arrival, the entrance barrier was not working. Then informed that only 15 holes in play. When we got to the first tee there was a sign “MATS TO BE USED ON ALL MOWN ARREAS “as no one had given us a mat we had to go back to the pro-shop for a mat. Tees, Winter Mats or on the fairway just in front of normal tee. 4/10. Fairways, very wet, had to use a mat for fairway shots. 2/10 Greens, aerated very uneven and bare. 3/10. All in all, this course should be closed to help it recover for the summer.
WOrsley Golf Club is a gem. It is an open, established course that reminds me of a large Manor House deer park. The layout is a little cramped around the later tees and greens but is a beautiful, well kept and interesting challenge. I had a great morning and shot a repectable forty two on the back nine without seeing the course before. My lunch was excellent and reasonably priced. I will be returning very soon.
I recommend this course
